Cosco Corp's 3Q net profit falls 61%

Cosco Corp (Singapore) said its third quarter net profit fell 61% to $16.4 million from the same period a year earlier due to lower contributions from dry-bulk shipping and shipyard operations.

Net profit attributable to equity holders of the company fell 84.1% on the year to $4.2 million in the third quarter.

Cosco Corp, a subsidiary of China's state-owned maritime conglomerate, China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co, said its profit for the first nine months of the year dropped 68% to $26 million.

The company's order-book stood at $7.2 billion at the end of September, up from $6.7 billion three months earlier.

Cosco Corp shares closed at $0.79, down nearly 12% so far this year, compared with a 1% gain in Singapore's benchmark Straits Times Index.

Fast-growing Riverstone Holdings faces 3 main growth risks

Possible pricing pressure is one.

Riverstone Holdings is seeing booming demand for its cleanroom and healthcare segments, but it remains vulnerable to 3 risks, according to OSK-DMG.

First, it could experience possible pricing pressure arising from its expansion in healthcare glove capacity.

"Riverstone’s European customers are increasingly asking the company to boost capacity to help them diversify their supplier base, which may potentially triple orders," noted OSK-DMG.

"If the company achieves its plan of expanding to an annual production capacity of 8.0bn pieces in FY19, we expect its earnings to grow at a CAGR of 22.4% starting from FY13, up more than 4.1x to MYR163.4m by then," it added.

A second risk for the firm are potential raw material price fluctuations, while its third vulnerability lies in its exposure to forex volatility.

If Riverstone manages to avoid these risks, then Riverstone could be well on its way to joining the the big league, according to OSK-DMG, due to its blistering rates of demand and expansion growth.

For 2Q 2013, Kencana Agri Limited recorded a revenue of US$43.6 million as compared to US$48.2 million in 2Q 2012. The decrease of 10% was mainly due to lower average selling price of CPO. The ASP of CPO decreased by 18% to US$708 per MT in 2Q 2013. The Group recorded an operating profit of US$3.2 million as compared to US$1.5 million in 2Q 2012. The higher operating profit was mainly due to gain in fair value changes in biological assets. Meanwhile, net profits after tax decreased 87% to US$93 thousand mainly due to higher interest expenses as a result of higher mature area.
