CCS is unlikely to approve any transport collaboration between Uber/Grab/CD...Uber and Grab announced this morning that Grab would acquire Uber's ridesharing and food delivery operations in Southeast Asia.
The acquisition would entail: (1) Uber taking a 27.5% stake in Grab and Uber CEO would join Grab's board;
(2) c.500 Uber Southeast Asia employees transiting to Grab;
(3) Uber / Uber Eats apps transiting to Grab platforms in 2 weeks / end May respectively.
Grab would be making a merger notification to the Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS), which is also reviewing a potential ComfortDelGro (CD) and Uber collaboration. We think that the CCS is unlikely to approve a CD-Uber or Uber-Grab collaboration at this stage as it would contravene the Competition Act - our rationale is detailed in our 9 Feb note "Does reduction in subsidies result in anti-competitive behaviour?".
