Receiving Hollande with “open arms” – Markel
Yesterday, European markets rose the most in more than a week as German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she will receive French president-elect Hollande with “open arms” as they work together to tackle the debt crisis. Hollande’s platform calls for policies Merkel opposes, including increased spending and a delayed deficit-reduction effort.

Yesterday, while European indices such as the Stoxx Europe 600 Index reversed early losses to climb back up 0.7% while benchmark stock indexes in Italy and Spain led gains, rallying more than 2.5 percent each. Asian markets had been battered yesterday, with both Singapore and Hong Kong finishing down more than 2%. China was down 0.5% on the performance of the FTSE China A50 Index.

“Liquidity coming out of ears” – Buffett
Over the weekend, Warren Buffett at his firm Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting gave markets his seal of approval with his comments that he “would put European banks and American banks in two very different categories. The American banking system is in fine shape. The European system was gasping for air a few months back,” He had also added that U.S. lenders have “liquidity coming out of their ears.”

Taking a view on the overall market via index warrants
Investors who wish to take a view on the various Asian indices without the need to stock pick may consider trading STI warrants – over the Singapore market; HSI warrants – over the Hong Kong market or China A50 warrants – over the China market.

Investors anticipating a run-up on the indices can buy call warrants while bearish investors can consider put warrants.

Singapore Market Wrap

Huge Sell-Off Yesterday

European election results rocked Asian equity markets yesterday, with the STI tumbling 2.2% day-on-day (dod) to 2,925.0. Both the HSI (-2.6% dod, 20,536.7) and FTSE China A50 (-0.5% dod, 8,474.1) closed in the red.

Investors were jittery after the French and Greek elections, with Francois Hollande ousting his rival Nicolas Sarkozy in France. Hollande is pro-spending and delayed deficit reduction. Over in Greece, voters supported political parties which are against bailout measures, raising concerns among investors about the country's ability to impose austerity measures.

Exposure to China via A50 warrants
For the first time in Singapore, investors can now gain a leveraged exposure to the Chinese stock market via Macquarie's FTSE China A50 index warrants. These warrants started trading yesterday.
